Today I am considering taking up a distance learning course. My present circumstances wont allow me to work or earn an income because I am on maternity leave.
I feel it is always a good idea to plan ahead. When you are a new mum your circumstances change. It isn't easy especially when I spent the last decade focusing on my career. Yes I am a careerist. So between taking my daughter to her play groups. I decided I needed some me time. Something to stimulate my brain, housework doesnot do this.
Distance learning whats that all about and will it suit me. Well looking after my daughter is number one on my list. So to do something at home would be ideal. As a trained artist/designer I have no time to plan. I need to have focus and some direction. Through exploration and discovery. I discovered there are a number of training /education institutes. The Open University being the biggest. Learn direct and home learning are others.
The Open University is international and mainly offers first and second degrees. I dont need a degree. My aim is to choose something I would get
into without distractions so I was thinking Photography, counselling or Interior Design. Photography is something I should have pursued earlier in my life. I had every opportunity and was even advised to.
Most centres are linked to universities and provide accreditation. Each student is allocated a distance learning tutor and is also sent course materials. So basically a lot of self study and motivation is required. As far as I am aware there are also opportunities to meet other students.
Costs is another factor to consider. It is expected that this route of learning keeps the costs down. I am not so sure. I now have to make a decision. A cheap course with future measurements. I would like to hear from others with any experiences.
